Part of the difficulty of the mass “downloading” of highways in the late 1990s was determining what to do with the routes. When the province opted to turn some of the less-significant routes over to the municipalities, they were left with the task of incorporating these routes into their own network, while at the same time dealing with the fact that these King’s Highway numbers were ingrained into the driving public’s mind for sometimes decades.
