The freeway section of Highway 6 descending the Niagara Escarpment towards Hamilton. What appears to be a large culvert in the picture here is actually a pedestrian underpass to connect the Bruce Trail across the highway.

Keeping with the theme of defunct municipalities, here’s an old Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Road sign. This is on an old alignment of Highway 6 through the small community of Freelton, right near the north end of the City of Hamilton’s current limits.

A snowy former Highway 52, looking south towards the Hwy 403 interchange.
Just a reminder of what we have ahead of us. Enjoy the good driving weather while we still have it.

Looking north along Highway 6 on the Mount Hope Bypass. Well, the first one. This section itself was bypassed in 2004 by the new Highway 6 diversion that linked Hamilton Airport with Highway 403. As can be seen in the background, the road was renamed to continue the City of Hamilton’s Upper James Street designation (though this portion is still MTO owned).

This photo, taken at the junction of Highways 5 & 6 at Clappison’s Corners, shows the older multi-piece style of highway junction assembly signs. This style is still used in most applications on highways overseen by MTO’s Central Region office.

Highway 53 in Ancaster, with the Highway 6 diversion passing overhead.
As mentioned before, MTO built Hwy 6 as a staged freeway south of Hamilton, in that it can be expanded to become a full freeway when traffic volumes dictate. The proximity of Hwy 53 here to the interchange of Hwy 6 with Hwy 403 created a situation where it was more beneficial to grade separate the two roadways and connect them with a partial interchange.

Highway 403 at the Fiddler’s Green Road overpass in Hamilton. This interchange has a weird feeling to it, I always find. It only has partial access (favoring traffic moving to/from the east) and the off-ramp dumps off onto a very residential side street.

Looking north along former Highway 52 from atop the Highway 403 overpass.
Highway 52 remains a very busy route, connecting Ancaster and the 403 with Hwy 8 and by extension, Cambridge.

A look westerly along a snowy Highway 2/53 near Ancaster. Until the 403 bypassed it in 1997 this road was very busy, as traffic heading between Brantford and Hamilton had to take this old section of highway. Now with most of the traffic gone, this 4-5 lane facility feels practically deserted.

After a tiny break, we’re back. I took a bunch of photos around Hamilton as part of a project I was doing for school. This particularly cold shot of the 403 is looking towards the Wilson Street (former Hwy 2) interchange.
Also, I love that I can indulge my hobby and still consider it a productive activity.
